Resolution of the Jefferson County Democratic Party Regarding Wars in the Middle East
WHEREAS: The American people through their votes last November and in numerous public opinion polls have said that it’s time to remove our troops from Iraq; and
WHEREAS: Contrary to the intent of the voters, the Bush/Cheney administration has instead chosen to escalate the war in Iraq and, is demonstrating in word and deed the intent to spread this war to Iran. Provocative words and actions in recent weeks include capturing Iranians who were present at the request of the Iraqis, moving a carrier group into the Persian Gulf and making unsubstantiated claims of Iranian involvement in attacks on American troops, and
WHEREAS: The 2006 platform of the Jefferson County Democratic Party calls for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq and prohibits spreading the war into Iran without a specific declaration of war by Congress, and
WHEREAS: Congress has the power and the duty to control the budget and the manner in which funds are spent, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED: We call on our representatives elected to the United States Congress to perform their Constitutional duty to do all in their power to stop these aggressive wars of choice by the Bush/Cheney administration in contravention of the will of the People. This process of Congressional oversight should be the first priority of all members of the Colorado Congressional delegation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: We call upon our representatives serving in state and local offices to consider the dire consequences of an expanded battle field on the State of Colorado and Jefferson County. We therefore we call on representatives at all levels of government to debate and pass resolutions petitioning our seven Congressional representatives and two United States senators to fulfill their responsibility to reflect the will of the citizens of Colorado and bring an end to this disastrous war of choice.
